Requesting a Check From Your Account
It is a fact that many of you will need cash from your accounts at some point. So, we thought we would share with you some information on check requests. There are three main check request scenarios: from a Pershing Brokerage account, directly from a mutual fund company and retirement account distributions.
Pershing Accounts: Generally, we keep enough cash available to cover a few months of fees, so in the event that you need cash, a trade to sell a security in the account may need to be done. Most trades require 3 days from the trade date to settle and make funds available. Once funds are available, the check can be requested online and mailed. So, please remember to plan ahead.
Direct Accounts: Most direct, mutual fund accounts are set up with phone privileges, which means that a check can be requested over the phone. If a request is called in before the close of business (1pm Pacific time), the transaction will be done at the close and the check will be processed the following business day. Most fund companies will mail the check the same day as processed, but some wait an additional day.
Retirement Account Distribution: In most cases, a signed distribution form is required to request funds from a retirement account. We will prepare the form and designate tax withholding, if any, per your instructions. The form can be sent to you via email, fax or regular mail for your signature and return to our office. Pershing and many fund companies no longer require an original signature, making email and fax timely alternatives. Since your retirement account will be one of the two types above (Pershing or Direct), the rest of the process is the same as a regular check request.
Other Considerations
Mailing: We highly recommend having your checks mailed to you via overnight shipping. It’s fast and trackable. If you don’t need your money right away, you can save a little by using regular mail, but we end up stopping payments on checks several times a year because they never arrive. We typically request overnight delivery with no signature required, eliminating the need to wait around for the truck.
ACH: A handy alternative to mailing a check is to use the Automated Clearing House system that your bank uses. Once an ACH form is submitted with a voided check attached (one time set-up usually takes 10 days), funds can be transferred directly to your bank account within 2-3 days. There is no fee and usually no waiting period for the funds to be available once deposited.
Third Party Checks: Whenever you request a check be made out to a party other than yourself or be mailed to an address other than the one on file, a signed authorization is required. We are always happy to help, but giving us enough advance notice is crucial to us providing you with the smoothest transaction possible. If you ever have questions, all you have to do is pick up the phone and we’ll be here!
